Qualified tax payers who visit the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster in downtown Norman, will have two options for preparing and filing their 2008 tax forms. The services are offered free of charge on a first-come, first served basis.
On Monday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. February 2 through April 13, Association for the Advancement of Retired Persons (AARP) volunteers will offer tax form preparation assistance in the Lowry Room at the library. The volunteers have been trained to assist low and middle-income taxpayers in preparing their basic tax returns. AARP volunteers are especially sensitive to the needs of taxpayers over the age of 60. Taxpayers are asked to bring last year’s tax returns, their W-2s and 1099s, and a photo ID. During these sessions, tax forms will be completed but not filed.
Individuals who are paying taxes on incomes of $40,000 or less may take advantage of a free service offered by the OU College of Law Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. VITA volunteers will be in the Computer Training Center at the library on Wednesday and Thursday eveningsfrom 6-8 p.m. January 28 through April 9.
Taxpayers working with the VITA volunteers are asked to bring with them all relevant paperwork and information such as W2s, 1099s, and social security numbers for dependents, along with a copy of last year’s tax return and a photo ID. VITA volunteers will do E-Files only and will not prepare a paper return.
