Children

Music Mix with Dino O'Dell Duo will educate through fun, and the musician responsible for the Dino persona has been "proudly tricking children into learning since 2003." Dino will be trying out a few new tunes this summer, as well as old favorites, so you definitely will not want to miss it!

Extreme Animals simultaneously help the animals in their care and educate young people to have a knowledge and respect of those animals. Come out to your hometown library to see an assortment of exotic creatures. Their presentation will be part discussion, part demonstration, and all education, even as children are enjoying the interactions with their new animal friends.

Science Museum Oklahoma programs have been a hit for several summers around the Pioneer Library System. This year they have several different programs for every age group. They specifically have five programs tailored towards children, which are listed below:

  • Close Encounters of the Chemistry Kind - Celebrate the role chemistry plays in our world with chemical reactions, eye-catching displays and even some controlled explosions.

  • Hogwarts Potions 101 - Straight from the pages of the Harry Potter series, beginning wizards get a chance to conduct experiments and brew magical mixtures.

  • Of Course, It's Rocket Science - We're building momentum and science know-how in this hands-on interactive aeronautical extravaganza.

  • The Night the Balloons Took Over the Lab - Take an "uplifting" adventure in both chemistry and physics and create a balloon-powered device for conducting experiments.

  • Physics Fun House - Children can enter a big-top themed setting where physics will amaze their mind and challenge their senses.

Teens

Leather Face Mummy Style with Patrick Riley brings back a  similar workshop that Riley toured libraries with in 2012. This year, his workshop will take on a fascinating Egyptian theme with Cobra shapes, pyramid masks, and other Egyptian designs that teens then will decorate in their own personal style.

  • Catching Fire - It's the latest round of "The Hunger Games," and teens will face the training grounds with their wilderness survival skills.

  • Imagineering: Crazy Collaborative Contraptions - Use pulleys, dominoes, tubes, and more to create a chain reaction contraption.

  • Surviving the Zombie Pandemic - Become part of the Zombie Responder Team and dave the world from a zombie outbreak.

  • It's Elementary, Doctor Watson will make you want to don your best 19th century disguises as we explore Victorian forensics through the eyes of Sherlock Holmes. Whether it's the chemestry of poison or the secrets hidden in a shoeprint, teens will experience first-hand the remarkable deductions that can come from the most mundane facts.

Paint & Perk with Wild for Art bring their activities to the PLS hometown libraries for an evening of painting, socializing, and fun. Participants will learn a little about perspective, foreground, background, mixing colors, shading, and blending.

Science in a Pickle with Food a Thought is sure to be a hit with patrons this summer. Food for Thought Learning Institute was a hit in local libraries last summer with its family-friendly tour looking at easy recipes using items most people already have in their cupboards. This year, participants in each workshop will work in groups at their own work stations with mason jars, spices, and water or vinegar as a preservative as they learn how to make their own pickles.

It's Elementary, Doctor Watson - Learn about the science behind the crime-solving methods of the legendary Sherlock Holmes. They won't literally go to 221B Baker Street, but they will enjoy an evening of detective work inside the local library.
