PLS BigRead Begins March 29
 This year's PLS Big Read choice, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, is a New York Times bestseller. It tells the story of four Chinese American women - drawn together by the shadow of their past - who begin meeting in San Francisco to play mah jong, invest in stocks, eat dim sum, and share stories. They call their gathering the Joy Luck Club.
It is a story about mother-daughter relationships, immigration and cultural identity, the American Dream, and reconciling dreams with realities.
Whether this is your first or sixth PLS Big Read with us, we hope you participate in the PLS Big Read: The Joy Luck Club. Read, discuss and join us for the Kick-Off on March 29.
Interested in meeting Amy Tan? Tickets are available, for purchase, to attend a brunch with the author on April 28. Tickets are being sold in table groups to individuals and organizations. Prices range from $50 to $100 for individual tickets and $300 to $600 for tables of six. For specifics regarding brunch ticket sales please call 701-7662.

Literacy is the WORD
In 2003, the National Center for Education Statistics estimated about 11 million American adults are not literate. Of these adults, 7 million are English speakers, and 4 million are illiterate due to a language barrier.
The ability to read is so crucial to daily living, it as an activity performed without thought, like blinking. Those who cannot read are faced with challenges every day, which put major limitations on their professional options, access to important information, and overall lives.
Through its Adult Literacy and English Language Learners Programs, the Pioneer Library System seeks to remove as many of those limitations as possible and improve the quality of life for its students by giving them one of the most important, rewarding skills of all: reading.
Stop by your hometown library to pick up this month's WORD magazine, which highlights PLS Literacy Services. You can also read WORD online or visit the Literacy Section of the PLS Website to learn more about our services or to volunteer to become a tutor.

From the Branch Manager Aiden Street:
Welcome to the new Southwest Oklahoma City Public Library! As the 10th branch in the Pioneer Library System we are so proud to open our doors for the residents of South Oklahoma City. We invite you to stop by and check us out beginning March 1. Join us as we host a Community Open House on March 26th from 4-8 pm in conjunction with our friends from the South OKC Chamber of Commerce.
Visitors will be able to get a new library card, checkout the latest movies from our Movie Box, browse our collection of over 55,000 new books, audio books, and literacy kits for adults, teens or children. Users can always access our collection of downloadable audio and ebooks here. A large public meeting room, as well as a conference room, will also be available for the public to reserve after April 2, 2012.

Help Us Make the Library 'Just Right'
If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter, you know we have been pushing our Customer Satisfaction Survey this past month. We are still collecting data, so we can begin or annual planning process. Here's just a little bit of what we have learned from the more than 600 surveys completed thus far:
» People like our computer classes;
» The libraries are used for educational, recreational and even work related purposes;
» Some of our bathrooms need work;
» Downloadables are liked, a lot, and more are wanted;
» Over all we run 60% on greeting you at the door;
» Half of you have library cards with another library.
So please take a moment, if you haven't already, and complete our Survey. And then ask a friend to complete it as well. We really want to make your hometown library 'Just Right'.
