TANF Program Receives Award
The Pottawatomie County Literacy Program’s New Horizons TANF (Temporary Assistance For Needy Families) Literacy class was chosen as the recipient of the 2012 Ruth Brown Memorial Award. This award is given by the Oklahoma Library Association’s Social Responsibilities Roundtable to recognize programs that address issues of social concern.
TANF recipients who have low reading or math levels are referred to the 30 hour a week literacy class where group and individualized instruction is offered by instructor Lori Chesser.
We want to express our sincere gratitude to the Oklahoma Library Association and all of our wonderful literacy partners who make this program possible: the Pioneer Library System, The Oklahoma Department of Libraries Literacy Resource Office and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Tip Of The Month
Make the Most of Everyday Text
There are many forms of text all around us from store signs and road maps to package labels and DVR manuals. You can bring some of this text to your weekly lessons. The following are just a few examples:

Phone books: you can find a lot of things in here, especially if you are trying to get your students acquainted with their community.
 Included are: descriptions of points of interest- including historic sites and entertainment venues; a community calendar of events; a listing of school and library locations; a city map and government offices.

Newspapers: look at classified ads, practice writing a letter to the editor, look for short sports, gardening or human interest articles to discuss.

Household papers: receipts, owner manuals for cars or appliances, brochures, catalogs, junk mail, ads and menus are all useful examples of everyday text.

Immigrants who would like to become U.S. citizens can learn information that is on the citizenship test.

Date: Tuesdays & Thursdays
Time: 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Location: Purcell Public Library
Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings from 7-8 the Purcell Library will host General Equivalency Diploma (GED) classes for those who would like to prepare for the test.
ESL Classes
English as a Second Language Class
Date: Mondays & Thursdays
Time: 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Location: Purcell Public Library
All students are invited to attend this class and improve their English speaking and writing skills.
Tutor Cafe

Location: Shawnee Public Library Computer Training Center
Tutor Café is meeting on a new date and time! Join us for coffee, cookies and an opportunity to meet other tutors and exchange ideas. Odyssey Book Club
Book: Coming On Home Soon by  Jacqueline Woodson

Odyssey Book Club meets the second Tuesday of each month. In May we will be discussing the Caldecott Honor book, Coming On Home Soon. Set during World War II, young Ada Ruth waits with her grandmother for the return of her mother, who left home in search of a job. Words and illustrations combine beautifully to bring to life the loneliness and anticipation they feel as they wait for her return.
