Moore Library offers art therapy for children

To offer children a way to communicate their feelings about the recent storms, the Moore Public Library and the ARC Project present a come-and-go art therapy session from 9 to 11:30 a.m.and 1 to 5 p.m. this Friday, June 14.

Children will receive a free backpack filled with art supplies which they can use to express themselves creatively with the facilitation of volunteer art therapists and counselors from the ARC Project. The library is located at 225 S. Howard, next to the community center.

The ARC Project: Art Relief for Children, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to children in need of a voice. Established as a disaster relief effort, The ARC Project responds to a state of emergency by assisting children therapeutically when disaster strikes. Their mission is to offer children a safe and inspirational environment to express their feelings of loss, abandonment, confusion, fear, etc. by giving them the tools to paint, draw and color. With the help of volunteer art therapists and art counselors, children are able to express their feelings and build a sense of self confidence so that they are better equipped to cope with their surroundings.

“The psychological impact of a disaster can be devastating for those involved. For children, the pain can be particularly hard to deal with or to express.  We want the library will be a place for families to begin the healing process, and will provide programs in the coming months to help facilitate this,” said Moore branch manager Ashley Miller.

“We invite any child who has been impacted by our recent weather events to visit us this Friday. It doesn’t matter where they are from. If they can benefit from an art therapy session such as this, they are welcome,” Miller said.
