Teens can craft an Egyptian work of art in mask maker’s workshop

Noted for years as one of the top teaching artists on the Oklahoma Arts Council’s roster, Patrick Riley’s name is well-known around the state and beyond.

But once upon a time, Riley was just a young boy looking for inspiration and direction. And he found both from afternoons spent among the collection at Shawnee’s Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art.

“My parents would sit me in there at the mummy in the museum when I was 3, and I figured out that she wouldn’t walk off so I would stay and sit down by her,” Riley said. “I loved Princess Tutu, she was my Egyptian princess.”

Riley will share that love and knowledge of Egyptian art and history at a mask making workshop for teens, at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Noble Public Library, 204 N. 5th St. It’s part of the library’s Summer Reading Program schedule of events for teens.

Riley brings back the mask making workshop he toured libraries with in 2012, but this time taking on an Egyptian theme. Riley will bring Cobra shapes, pyramid masks and other Egyptian designs that teens then will decorate in their own personal style.

The group also will get to see and even try on many of Riley’s own Egyptian mask designs that he will bring from his collection and learn a little more about the time period.

“We’ll focus on the pharaohs and the royalty of Egypt, so it will be a history lesson as well,” Riley said.

Major sponsors for this year’s Summer Reading Program are the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Oklahoma Arts Council, Hitachi, Kirkpatrick Family Fund, The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, Sonic, Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan, The Oklahoman, the Pioneer Library System and the Pioneer Library System Foundation.
