Purcell Public Library seeks, photos, stories of yesterday for exhibit

Purcell - Key Ingredients

Key Ingredients

The Purcell Public Library is putting together the stories of the past of McClain County, specifically those involving the food and dining traditions of the area.

The stories will be put together in an exhibit that will be part of the “Key Ingredients: America by Food” presentation in early 2012 at the library.

Three gathering days for stories are planned at the library:

Saturday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m.-noon

Tuesday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m.-noon

Friday, Nov. 18, 1-6 p.m.

The library is seeking photos of family dinners, kitchens, restaurants, grocery stores, fruit stands, agriculture of the area, and historical recipes and we will scan them. In addition, interviewers will be present to record oral stories of the history and culture of food in the area. Those with stories or photos may come during any of the three gathering days to share their memories.

The information will be used to make up a local exhibit that will be an addition to the material from the Smithsonian Institution, which will be bringing the Key Ingredients exhibit to the city Jan. 28-March 3, 2012.

“Key Ingredients: America By Food” is a Smithsonian Institution outreach program that is visiting six sites in Oklahoma this fall and in 2012. The exhibit is part of Museum on Main Street, a partnership of the Smithsonian and state humanities councils, including the Oklahoma Humanities Council, which helped bring the exhibit to Oklahoma.
