The Purcell Public Library and Smithsonian Institution are celebrating the national history of food with the “Key Ingredients: America by Food” exhibit, on display at the library through March 3.

But part of the library’s activities with the exhibit has revolved around a look back at local history of food in Purcell and throughout McClain County.

The library takes a look back at those “Key Ingredients of McClain County History” at a program at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Meeting Room of the library, 919 N. 9th St.

A collection of both oral and video histories gathered from members of the community will be presented. Many longtime residents of Purcell and the surrounding area provided those stories and many photographs at several gathering days last fall.

All attendees will receive commemorative Key Ingredients recipe cards, as well as a special card holder for them.  Light refreshments also will be served.

Registration is not required to attend.

“Key Ingredients: America by Food” is a Smithsonian Institution outreach program that is visiting six sites in Oklahoma this fall and in 2012. The exhibit is part of Museum on Main Street, a partnership of the Smithsonian and state humanities councils, including the Oklahoma Humanities Council, which helped bring the exhibit to Oklahoma.

Further local support has been provided by the Pioneer Library System, the McClain County OSU Extension Office, Chickasaw Nation’s “Get Fresh” Program, The Heart of Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce, the McClain County Historical Society and Museum, the City of Purcell, Oklahoma Home and Community Education and the Friends of the Purcell Public Library.
