Shawnee Public Library
Award-winning author Rilla Askew will discuss her life’s work and her latest book “Kind of Kin” at the Shawnee Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 7, as part of her tour this summer of the Pioneer Library System.
Askew was the 2011 recipient of the Oklahoma Center for the Book’s Arrell Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award, given annually for outstanding contribution to literature by an Oklahoma author. She has two other novels that have earned Oklahoma Book Awards, and her first novel The Mercy Seat was a PEN/Faulkner Award nominee.
Her new novel is inspired by the push of legislation made in 2007 in the Oklahoma State Legislature to toughen immigration laws in the state, and the reaction caused for those personally affected by the legislation.
