Touch a Truck, a favorite tradition for families throughout the area, returns for its ninth year the morning of Saturday, April 27 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds.
The morning begins with a special “quiet hour” for children with special needs from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., with the event continuing from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Touch a Truck features an up-close look for children and families of about 40 vehicles of all kinds. Representatives from each participating business or organization sponsoring a truck will be available to educate visitors about how their vehicle works and what kinds of services they provide.
Among those sure to be favorites are the Medi Flight helicopter from Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center and the public safety vehicles from the Norman Police and Fire Departments and EMSSTAT.
After eight years under the direction of MOMS Club of Norman, coordination for this year’s Touch a Truck has been handed off to the Pioneer Library System and the Pioneer Library System Foundation, which provides advocacy and financial support to the hometown libraries in the library system.
A suggested donation of $2 per child will go to support children’s programming in each of the four hometown libraries in Cleveland County. Previous Touch a Truck events have raised more than $28,000, allowing the library to purchase furniture, toys and supplies for the Norman Public Library Children’s Department that otherwise would not have been possible.
Major sponsors for the event include Masters Oil Company, The Norman Transcript, Dr. Victor T. Wilson, MD, FAAP, the Pioneer Library System and the Pioneer Library System Foundation. Event sponsors are Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy, Cleveland County Fairgrounds, David Stanley Chevrolet, Drs. Eileen Fox and James Fields, Ideal Homes, Norman Masonic Lodge No. 38, OG&E, Dr. Phillip Parker, Raising Cane’s, Republic Bank & Trust, Thompson Pool & Patio, Trinity Yoga and Wal-Mart.
