Purcell families will enjoy a special “Stories of the Southwest Family Story Time” Thursday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Purcell Public Library, 919 N. Ninth. Valerie Kimble, librarian for Children’s Services for the Pioneer Library System will present an interactive program of children’s stories featuring the Little Read book The First Tortilla by Rudolfo Anaya. No registration is required.
The First Tortilla retells a Mexican legend about how a small girl receives corn kernels and uses them to create masa, dough that is baked into the first tortilla to save her struggling village.
The Little Read is a component of the library system’s Big Read a literary project which is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. Big Read events focus on Anaya’s novel, Bless Me, Ultima.
Adults attending or bringing their children to a Little Read event may register themselves for the Bless Me, Ultima Ultimate, Altima Give Away drawing for a 2005 Nissan Altima offered by Bob Moore Nissan of Norman as an incentive to participate in The Big Read. No purchase is necessary to enter the May 5 drawing. Entrants must be 18 or older and not an employee of Bob Moore Auto Group or Pioneer Library System. Entries are also available at the dealership, I-35 and Tecumseh Road in Norman.
