Book Review

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Reviewed by Kate L.

book jacket for Before I FallThis edgy view of high school is about Samantha and her three best friends, the popular girls whom everyone envies but are afraid of. This angst-filled tale begins with a day in the life of these mean girls and ends with a car crash they’re involved in after a party.

We are led to believe that Sam is dead. But after the crash, she wakes up every morning and relives the day. Surprisingly, the daily scenarios are different enough to hold the readers' interest. Sam finally figures out that she needs to make things right in her life. She begins to see herself and her friends in a new light and the impact of their meanness on others.

So is Sam dead? In changing her life can she save herself? This book delivers a powerful and timely message about bullying and its tragic results. Recommended for grades 9 and up.
