Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27, 2013 and all of the Pioneer Library System's public libraries will be closed on Sunday, May 26 and Monday, May 27 as we honor those who have died in service to protect our country.
By the early 1900s, Memorial Day was a time to express memories, as many people visited the graves of lost relatives, whether or not they died in battle. Thos was also during the time where the holiday had some joy put into it as well as the mourning.
Traditional celebrations of this holiday are cookouts with family and friends, watching sports, visiting cemeteries and memorials of those we have lose, and flying the American flag at half staff from dawn until noon.
