In our present-day turbulent economic times, many cannot afford to lose any money, especially due to the misunderstanding of credit card use. Though Oklahoma foreclosure rates are lower than in many other parts of the country, one out of every 1,576 homes in our state is in foreclosure, according to RealtyTrac.
On Monday, December 7, the Shawnee Library will offer “Understanding Credit: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” instructed by training and technical assistance consultant Inger Giuffrida. The session, beginning at 6:30 p.m., will help young adults understand credit, how to use it, and how to avoid problems with it. Participants will also learn what is on their credit report and credit scoring, and how to decipher the significance of these numbers. Registration is required.
“Understanding Credit: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” is an adjunct to the Pioneer Library System’s Smart Money Program. The program, sponsored by a generous grant from the FINRA (Financial Investor Regulatory Authority) and the American Library Association, will last for the next two years. The purpose of the grant is to build the capacity of U.S. public libraries to provide effective, unbiased financial and investor education resources and services to library patrons.

Oklahoma’s Red Dirt Book Festival brought the theme “Imagine Oklahoma” out of imaginations and into engaging discussions, presentations, workshops. This 2009 biennial festival, held November 5-7 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, showcased 62 presenters, including many published authors, editors, publishers, historians and scholars, who give 29 different workshops and presentations.
By invitation only, a select group of high school students participated in a special writing workshop at St. Gregory’s University led by University of Oklahoma professional writing professor Mel Odom. Odom’s discussion included information about blog writing, a medium that he feels will not only help new writers get out there, but will also become increasingly important in upcoming years.
The festival for the public began early Friday morning at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. Norman librarian and blues guitarist Steven Streetman provided music while attendees gathered for the Opening Session.
Mayor Linda Peterson welcomed the audience to Shawnee and spoke proudly about her city. Also present to welcome Red Dirt attendees were Jennifer Kidney, director of literature programs for the Oklahoma Humanities Council; Julia Harmon, the Pioneer Library System’s Pottawatomie County Coordinator, Shawnee Branch Manager, and Red Dirt Book Festival Chair; and Cindy Stevens, of the Pioneer Library System Center for Reader Services.
Stevens introduced featured speaker Ron Stahl, mentioning that while many may know him as co-host of the Integris Discover Oklahoma television series, Stahl is also a very generous supporter of libraries.
In his speech, Stahl said that he grew up hanging around libraries, in part because his mother was a librarian and the library was air-conditioned in the hot Oklahoma summers.
Stahl said that our state is bigger than most would think, with both swamps and mountains. He showed several clips from his Discover Oklahoma show, causing laughs with a feature about a singing Chihuahua a canine celebrity in Broken Bow.

You’ve often heard it said, “Use it, or lose it.” Now, adults 18 years and older have the opportunity to get out of the house and stimulate their minds with a morning of fun at the Shawnee Public Library, 101 N. Philadelphia, on Thursday, October 15, beginning at 10 a.m.
This adult program requires no pre-registration and is the first in a series of three special Mind Game Days to be announced. Librarians say there will have crossword puzzles, cards, Wii, PS2, dominoes, puzzles and sodoku to explore. Sodoku is a logic based, number placement puzzle. Wii is a video game console as is PS2 (PlayStation 2).
“Games are educational. They involve critical thinking, problem solving, and a constant learning cycle based on hypothesizing, experimenting and evaluating. Some videogames are healthy, such as the Wii,” said Shawnee information services librarian, Lisa Lempges. “Gaming has recreational value. It’s fun, entertaining, and cathartic as well as social,” she said. |
