Shawnee Public Library staff are having a celebration for Julia Harmon, branch manager of the Shawnee Library Friday, January 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the library, 101 N. Philadelphia. The public is invited to come and go at an informal reception.Harmon served the three-county library system for 25 years in a number of positions. She has been manager of the Shawnee library since 2005. During that time she has overseen two Red Dirt Book Festivals and a major renovation of the branch as well as introducing outreach services into the Shawnee Mall.
Julia Harmon began her association with the Pioneer Library System in 1984 when she worked as a librarian at the Tecumseh Public Library; in 1991, Harmon became Branch Manager of the Tecumseh Public Library. She became the Information Services Manager for the Shawnee Public Library in 1997.
Harmon moved to the Moore Public Library in 2001 to serve as the Manager of the Circulation Department. In 2001, Julia Harmon was called upon to help create the Center for Readers Services of the Pioneer Library System.
In a recent editorial to the Shawnee News-Star, Harmon wrote of things she would never grow too old for and will always enjoy. Receiving mail, particularly written letters and correspondence, was something she will always anticipate with joy, she said. She retires, looking forward to continuing to receive correspondence from the many friends she has garnered in her 25 year history with the public library system.
