October is all about safety at the Sixth Annual D.A.R.E. Kids Safety Day sponsored by the Tecumseh Public Library, D.A.R.E., and the Tecumseh Police Department. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Middle School parking lot at 315 W. Park in Tecumseh.
The annual event draws a large crowd of children and adults to see the OU Medi-Flight helicopter, police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and other equipment that are on display. The activities are designed so that children can learn how to stay safe and what to do during emergency situations. The smoke house will once again be available so that participants can learn how to exit their home during a fire.
Representatives from the police and fire departments, animal control services, React Ambulance Service, and OU Medical Center Medi-Flight will be available to answer any questions that kids may have. The bomb squad will have their equipment on display and demonstrate how it works. Added to the event this year, parents can have their children fingerprinted courtesy of the Tecumseh Police Department.
The City of Tecumseh electric department and Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority will present Hazard Hamlet and teach about staying safe around electricity. Making an appearance at the display will be Wise Owl to hand out candy and Frisbees. At the Tecumseh Library’s booth, kids can make a craft, engrave a dog tag, get free stickers, and a free book. The Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce and State Farm of Tecumseh will also have booths with free handouts.
Lunch will be available with free pizza and drinks made possible by donations from the Friends of the Tecumseh Library, Daylight Donuts, J&J Grocery, and Mazzios.
“Families are invited to attend our annual Safety Day,” says D.A.R.E. Officer Dee VanDuser of the Tecumseh Police Department. “Children can meet and interact with police, fire, and other emergency personnel and learn about their equipment and how to respond in an emergency. Thanks to our many donors, everything is free.”
